Selecting a tow car

The tow car used for a vehicle depends on the budget of the vehicle owner, condition of the vehicle and distance over which the vehicle is being towed.
1. Find out the weight of the vehicle being towed away. The weight will also depend on whether the vehicle is empty or not
2. Get the weight of the tow car
3. The engine capacity of the tow car should be adequate for the weight of the car and the vehicle being towed. The engine requirement is usually 80 horsepower per ton
Some vehicle owners may prefer to have their vehicle transported by van instead
Towing away cars

Cars may towed away for different reasons
1. Not running
2. Very old model - spare parts no longer available
3. Damaged in an accident
The insurance company has to be contacted and informed that the insurance policy is discontinued
The local motor vehicle department is contacted, and the vehicle owner has to fill and sign a form stating that he or she is no longer responsible for the vehicle. In some places an abandonment fee of US$50 has to be paid and the vehicle owner will get an acknowledgment of receipt of the fees
The towing company is then responsible for handling the car.
