It is possible to find a used car in another country in the European Union that you want to buy and then bring it back to the UK. It will however involve spending a bit more money and completing a bit of paperwork. The following are some of the things you will need to do before you can bring the used car back to the UK.
You will have to pay VAT on the car as soon as it arrives in the UK. If the car you have bought has less than 3,750 miles on the clock or is less than six months old it will be considered to be a new car and will require you to fill in a VAT 415 form. Normally though, used cars will go on VAT form 414. The certificate of conformity which will prove that the European safety standards are met by your car will need to be produced too.
Your next step will be to register your car using form V55/5 and pay the money required for this. When you are registering the car you will need to prove that you have paid the VAT and you will be required to produce any paperwork associated with the car. If used cars from abroad are older than three years they will also require an MOT. You will also be asked to show identification and to give evidence that you have actually purchased the car.
There is a little bit of work involved in bringing used cars into the UK from other EU countries but it is fairly straightforward. And if you get a great car and a great price then the little bit of extra work will be worth your while. But you should know that the amount of paperwork that will need to be completed for cars bought outside the EU will be a lot more.
When you think it’s time to look out for used cars for sale, you may end up much better off by thoroughly researching the cars that interest you. Good research lets you find only the best models available. When your research is done, you could very well end up with a great used porsche or even a used rolls royce.
